Rudy Vallee , best known as a popular crooner in the ‘30s, started his career on saxophone. He played drums in high school, taught himself clarinet and then switched to sax when he heard Rudy Wiedoeft. Vallee’s real name was Hubert, but his fascination with Wiedoeft earned him the nickname “Rudy” which stuck.
He dropped out of college to join a British big band at London’s Savoy Hotel but returned to Yale in and graduated with a degree in philosophy. In he formed the Connecticut Yankees band which was booked into the Heigh-Ho Club in New York. There he picked up his introductory “Heigh-Ho Everybody” and became the rage, singing into a megaphone to enhance his thin voice.
The Hollywood film, The Vagabond Lover (), featured the band, and their weekly radio broadcasts drew large audiences and high profile guests. Vallee also recorded several successful singles that year, including “Marie.” He enjoyed success throughout the ‘30s as a radio personality and crooner and appeared in several films as a collegiate heartthrob.

Rudy Vallee Biography
Rudy Vallee (July 28, - July 3, ) was a popular United States singer, actor, bandleader, and entertainer. Born Hubert Prior Vallée in Island Pond, Vermont, he grew up in Westbrook, Maine. In high school he took up the saxophone and acquired the nickname "Rudy" after then famous saxophonist Rudy Weidoeft.
Vallee played clarinet and saxophone in various bands around New England in his youth, in the mid s played with the Savoy Havana Band in London. He then returned to the States to form his own band, Rudy Vallee and the Connecticut Yankees. With this band he started taking vocals (supposedly reluctantly at first). He had a rather thin tenor voice and seemed more at home singing sweet ballads than attempting vocals on jazz numbers. However his singing, together with his suave manner and handsome good looks attracted great attention, especially from young women. Vallee was given a recording contract, and in started performing on the radio.

One of the most popular American singers in the s and s, Rudy Vallee became a sought-after supporting actor in Hollywood films, an important pioneer in radio variety shows, and much later a musical comedy star on Broadway.
Born Hubert Prior Vallée in Island Pond, Vermont, he was a self-taught drummer in his high school band. In he began a self-study of the clarinet and saxophone, frequently spending six to eight hours a day practicing, and within a year was performing publicly at the Strand Theater in Portland, Maine. After a year at the University of Maine, he transferred to Yale in the fall of , where he earned tuition by playing his sax at country clubs and college dances. While playing with the Yale Collegians he began using a hand-held mega-phone to amplify his crooning, light-tone voice. The megaphone—similar to the ones used by cheerleaders—became his trademark and was soon copied by other vocalists.
In Vallee dropped out of Yale and went to London, where he played sax at the Savoy Hotel with Vincent Lopez and the Savoy Havana Band. Returning to Yale, he continued his studies and graduated with a Bachelor of Philosophy degree in Moving to New York City
