Nascido em Caprese, na Itália, em 6 de março de , foi viver em Florença com a família de um lapidário a partir dos seis anos de idade, após a morte de sua mãe.
Desde muito cedo Michelangelo manifestou interesse pelas artes, e aos treze anos tornou-se aprendiz de pintor de Domenico Ghirlandaio.
Os talentos de Michelangelo se tornaram evidentes quando ele trabalhou para Ghirlandaio. Assim, dentro de um ano, ele foi enviado para a poderosa família Medici para continuar seu treinamento com o escultor Bertoldo di Geovanni.
E foi nos jardins da família Medici que Michelangelo esculpiu suas primeiras esculturas: Baco (–) e Cupido Adormecido ().
Em seguida, Michelangelo começou a se concentrar em seu trabalho, criando para si uma renomada carreira como pintor e escultor no Renascimento italiano.
