Bernardino de Sahagún, a Franciscan missionary, arrived in New Spain in and began a prolific career of evangelization of the Nahua peoples to Christianity. Born Bernardino de Rivera in Sahagún, Spain, he was trained in Latin, history, philosophy, and theology at the University of Salamanca and became a Franciscan around He spent his first years in the New World in Tlalmanalco (–) and as guardian of the Xochimilco Convent. In , Sahagún began teaching Latin at the newly established Colegio de Santa Cruz in Tlatelolco. At the college, indigenous pipiltin (sons of nobles) were trained in the Renaissance humanist tradition of missionary teachers and became the painters, sculptors, scribes, interpreters, and historians of the New World. Sahagún also worked as missionary to the convents of Xochimilco, Huejotzingo, and Cholula, and fulfilled various ecclesiastical duties in the Puebla, Tula, and Tepeapulco and Michoacán regions. Little known today is the courageous Catholic friar, linguist, and ethnographer Fray Bernardino de Sahagún. He was born in Sahagún, Spain, in and drank deeply from the well of Renaissance humanism that had been washing over Europe for several decades. Mastering Latin at an early age, he startled his instructors with the intensity and depth of his observational powers. He arrived in Mexico (New Spain) in with a group of Church prelates whose job it would be to convert the natives to Catholicism.
Like the best clerics of his era, he was a man of contradictions; an ardent believer in the faith, he nevertheless believed the customs and traditions of the native Mexicans should be shown great deference and respect. Soon after arriving in Mexico, he applied himself to the mastery of the Aztec language, Nahuatl, and achieved a level of fluency in that tongue that was equaled by none of his peers.
