Frank Alvin Gotch was an American professional wrestler who is considered one of the most famous figures in the history of wrestling. Born on April 27, , on a farm in Humboldt, Iowa, Gotch grew up as the youngest of nine children in a German immigrant family. His father, Frederick Rudolph Gotch, served in the Union Army during the Civil War.
As a child, Gotch worked on his parents' farm and attended school during the winter months. Although he initially dreamed of becoming a professional boxer, his interest in wrestling grew when he defeated opponents much older than him at the age of Gotch's physical strength, developed through his work on the farm, allowed him to excel in the sport.
Gotch's first professional wrestling match took place on June 18, , but unfortunately, he lost. However, in his second match, he defeated Marshall Green. Former US Champion Dan McLeod, who was staying nearby the Gotch farm, heard about the talented young wrestler. McLeod challenged anyone to a match during a festival, and Gotch, unaware of McLeod's true identity, accepted the challenge.
In the book Greatest Sports Heroes, author Mac Davis writes that Frank Gotch "was the idol of millions in the United States , Canada and Mexico " and "made wrestling a big-time sport in his day." Frank Gotch was born April 27, , on a farm near Huboldt, Iowa, and lived in Humboldt all his life. He trained under the great Farmer Burns and defeated Tom Jenkins for the U.S. title in Gotch won the world championship from George Hackenschimdt, the famed Russian Lion, in Their rematch in in Comiskey Park drew 33, fans, and made Gotch a sports super star.
After the first Hackenschmidt match, Gotch starred in a play that traveled the East Coast and Europe . He also toured in the top circus of the day, taking on all comers. President Teddy Roosevelt invited him to the White House twice, and he was preparing to run for governor of Iowa when he was struck down by kidney failure. He died at his home on December 17, . Gotch was the last of nine children born to Frederich Rudolph and Amelia Gotch. His parents were farmers who were married in and moved to the United States from Germany in Gotch attended a one-room schoolhouse in north-central Iowa, but like most children of the day he spent much of his time working on the farm. Gotch gained a reputation wrestling against other farm boys; his big break came when he was twenty-one years old.
In those days, big-name professional wrestlers would travel from town to town challenging local tough guys to matches. They would take bets on the outcome and pocket the winnings. On 18 June Dan McLeod, once considered the heavyweight champion of the United States, came to Luverne, Iowa, and challenged Gotch. There were no formal sanctioning bodies for wrestling, so champions were declared by newspapers, and title matches were arranged by promoters.
