Some of the most tantalizing entries in the thriller genre are those films that forgo extensive backstory and exposition, and instead build increasingly gripping tension between the protagonist and antagonist on screen. Thats certainly the case for the new drama, Alone, which was directed and edited by action genre filmmaker and television helmer, John Hyams.
The directors latest project is driven by its sheer confidence in the simplicity of its story, which was penned by screenwriter Mattias Olsson. The scribe effortlessly showcased the power of minimalism in Alone, which thrives on the imminent physical and emotional conflict between the heroine and villain, who were played by Jules Willcox and Marc Menchaca.
The suspense-driven movie celebrates the genre by delving straight to the fragile core of the human experience. It examines the stages of grief as a one-on-one battle for survival between Willcox and Menchacas equally strong-willed characters.
Olsson wrote and co-directed the Swedish feature, Försvunnen, which is translated to Gone in English, and serves as the inspiration for Alone. The American remake, which premiered at
AFM: Father-Son Filmmakers Peter and John Hyams on Their Shared Desire to ‘Blow S*** Up’
If the American Film Market were looking for a motto to hang over the Lowes Hotel in Santa Monica for this years event, they could do worse than use the mantra of veteran genre director Peter Hyams.
It was something me and my camera operator, Steve Campanelli had: each morning before we went to shoot: wed put our arms around each other, like football players, and say four things: 1. Go bigger or go home. 2. If it cant be fixed with a hammer, it cant be fixed. 3. If it doesnt fit, force it. 4. Lets blow shit up.
Hymas four rules have proved an effective blueprint for making indie movies that both satisfy and defy genre conventions. His long and varied filmography, including conspiracy thriller Capricorn One (), with Elliott Gould and James Brolin; sci-fi Western Outland () with Sean Connery, the Gene Hackman/Anne Archer actioner Narrow Margin () and Jean-Claude Van Dammes time-traveling fight film Timecop (), has secured Hyams place in cult cinema history.
