CV, initially named Oriskany, was renamed Wasp on 26 September , to honor CV-7, lost in action eleven days earlier. (The name Oriskany was subsequently assigned to CV)

A wasp is any of numerous winged hymenopterus insects possessing smooth, slender bodies, and an abdomen attached by a narrow stalk. They have well developed wings, biting mouthparts, and often administer painful stings. Eight American warships had previously borne the name:

  1. A Continental Navy schooner
  2. A sloop-of-war.
  3. A schooner.
  4. A sloop.
  5. A sloop-of-war.
  6. A side-wheel gunboat.
  7. A patrol yacht.
  8. An aircraft carrier (CV-7).

Giant Ichneumon Wasp (Megarhyssa macrurus) Ovipositing

Body length: up to 5 cm

Ovipositor length: up to 13 cm   ( about 3 times its body length)

From the above pictures and videos we can see how the wasp deploys its extra-long ovipositor. It does so by curling a portion of its ovipositor into a disc-shaped bag, like the bag covering a badminton racket. This bag is double layered: the ventral cuticle of the 7th abdominal segment forms the inner layer and the dorsal cuticle between the 7th and 8th abdominal segment forms the outer layer. Thus we can appreciate that although the ovipositor looks like it is inside the wasp’s abdomen; it is actually completely on the outside.

It has been observed that the size of the disc can be up t

The eighth Wasp (CV-7) was laid down on 1 April at Quincy, Mass., by the Bethlehem Shipbuilding Co., launched on 4 April , sponsored by Mrs. Charles Edison, the wife of the Assistant Secretary of the Navy Charles Edison, and commissioned on 25 April at the Army Quartermaster Base, South Boston, Mass., Capt. John W. Reeves, Jr., in command.

Wasp remained at Boston through May, fitting out, before she got underway on 5 June for calibration tests on her radio direction finder gear. After further fitting out while anchored in Boston Harbor, the new aircraft carrier steamed independently to Hampton Roads, Va., anchoring there on 24 June. Four days later, she sailed for the Caribbean in company with Morris (DD).

En route, she conducted the first of many carrier qualification tests. Among the earliest of the qualifiers was Lt. (jg.) David T. McCampbell, who later became the Navy's top-scoring "ace" in World War II. Wasp arrived at Guantanamo Bay in time to
