Perumthachan Biography
Perumthachan is a legendary figure in the folklore of Kerala and Kerala architecture and wood works are fully dedicated to him. "Perunthachan" literally means Great craftsman. All Kerala artists and architects pay due respect to him and before initiating any work, they pray to this legendary craftsman. Many folk stories related to his birth, siblings and the envious story of him and his son are still popular in Kerala. National award winning movie, Perunthachan is a record of his life history and his clashes with his son, who himself was an architect brilliant than his father.
Many of his legends and stories are compiled in the famous Malayalam work, Aithehya Mala, written by Kottarathil Sankunni. Set of stories compiled under ‘Parayi petta pantheerukulam’ has been read by all Malayalis across the world and as per this book, Perunthachan was born to a Brahmin father Vararuchi and scheduled caste mother and he has 11 siblings - Mezhathol Agnihothri, Pakkanar, Rajakan, Vallon, Vaduthala Nair, Uppukoottan, Akavoor Chathan, Karakkal Amma, Pananaar, Naranath Bhranthan and Vayillakunnilappan. Ego and professional jealousy are always associated with professionals. Most of the professionals cannot withstand the rising of their competitors, even if they are closely related to them. Story of Perumthachan, one of the twelve sons of Vararuchi and Panchami, the parayi too was not different. He was a great architect and as he has been adopted by a carpenter, Perumthachan too engaged in the same profession. Even now there are several architectural wonders in Kerala which are believed to be created by Perumthachan.

When the people of his village, Uliyannoor planned to have a pond near their temple they assigned the work to Perumthachan. When some people insisted to have a pond with a round shape, some others insisted that it should be in square shape. There were several others who demanded a triangular pond and a rectangular pond. Perumthachan agreed to all and constructed a pond which is round shape when looked at it at a specific angle and round in other angles. It is triangular in one angle and rectangular in another angle. Let&#;s start off with a few well-known details in the legend of Perumthachan. Most of what we now know about Perumthachan is either from Kottarathil Sankunni&#;s Aithihyamala or word of the mouth. The master craftsman was also immortalised in G Sankarakurup&#;s poem Perumthachan and Ajayan&#;s movie of the same name. In the latter, actor Thilakan, who was truly a Perumthachan himself in his field, morphed into the master architect so much that the legend is now inseparably associated with him.
According to most myths, Perumthachan was one of twelve children of Vararuchi, a saint at Vikramaditya&#;s court and his parayi wife, Panchami. Varuruchi, who can give Marvel&#;s Odin a run for his money in the competition to claim the title of worst father, had Panchami abandon all her children at birth with an excuse &#;va keeriya daivam athinolla vazhiyum kandittond&#;. Perumthachan landed in Uliyannoor and was raised by Achari parents who trained him in the art of carpentry and vastushastram.
