Meet Raymond Nonnatus, the saint who was “not born”

St. Raymond Nonnatus surrendered his life for that of Christians captured by Muslims

The Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mercy, more commonly known as the Mercedarians, was founded in the year by St. Peter Nolasco. His purpose was the redemption of Christians captured and imprisoned by the Muslims. To become a Mercedarian requires an additional commitment on the part of those wanting to join the order. It is known as their “fourth vow.”

In addition to the traditional vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, the Mercedarians also vow to willingly trade their lives for the lives of others. One of the original Mercedarians, St. Raymond Nonnatus, did just that.

If his surname, “Nonnatus,” seems strange, it’s because it is Latinized and means “not born.” In his father brought him into the world with a dagger, opening the womb of his mother, who died in labor.

Raymond’s father owned several farms and he wanted Raymond to manage one of them. Raymond, however, was drawn to the religious life. He possessed a deep devotion to God and the Blessed Virgin. Nearby was the ancient chapel of St. Nicholas and he would frequently go t

Born in Catalonia, Spain, Saint Raymond Nonnatus was delivered via caesarean operation after his mother died during childbirth.  Hence his nickname, Nonnatus, which means &#;not born.&#;  This miraculous survival made him Patron Saint of childbirth and pregnant mothers.  He grew up as a pious man and drawn to the religious life.  With his father&#;s permission, he went to Barcelona and became part of the Mercedarians, an order founded by Saint Peter Nolasco, which aimed to ransom Christians taken hostage by Moors of North Africa.  Saint Raymond Nonnatus was later ordained as a priest and then succeeded Saint Peter Nolasco as Master General and chief ransomer of the Order.  He set forth and fulfilled the mission of his Order by ransoming Christian slaves, which included captives in Valencia and people in Algiers, Africa.  He also offered himself as a hostage in exchange of almost 30 Christians when his money was no longer enough to ransom them.  While in captivity, he suffered immensely from the hands of the Moors, until his Order ransomed him.

He was nominated as Cardinal by Pope Gregory IX upon his return to Spain, but died on his way to Rome.

Saint Raymond was born in Portella, Catalonia, Spain, he was named &#;Nonnatus&#; (meaning &#;not born&#;) because he was delivered by caesarean section after his mother tragically died during childbirth.

Raymond&#;s early life was deeply spiritual, leading him to join the Mercedarians in Barcelona. This religious order, founded by St. Peter Nolasco, was dedicated to ransoming Christians enslaved by the Moors. Following Nolasco, Raymond became the primary ransomer, taking the dangerous journey to Algeria to free these captives.

However, during one of his missions, Raymond faced a predicament. His funds were exhausted, but many still remained in chains. Undeterred, he offered himself as a hostage to ensure the release of others. While in captivity, Raymond&#;s courage shone as he continued to evangelize, leading to the conversion of several Muslims. This act enraged the local governor, who ordered him to be executed by impalement.

Raymond&#;s life was spared due to his potential high ransom value, but he was brutally punished: he had to run the gauntlet and endured further tortures for his unwavering faith. After eight long months, Peter Nolasco, his mentor, ransomed him, brin
