The Black Truth Understanding Theodore de Bry’s Role in the “Black Legend” AMANDA BROOKS-KELLY Columbia College, Class of ABSTRACT In the early twentieth century, Spanish bureaucrat and writer Julían Juderías coined the term “black legend” to describe a supposed denigration of Spain and its colonial legacy. Juderías and his intellectual inheritors focused their critique on Theodore de Bry (), a Flemish engraver who illustrated Bartolomé de las Casas’ A Very Brief Account of the Destruction of the Indies () as well as de las Casas himself, for having exaggerated brutalities in the Spanish New World. But comparative analysis of de Bry’s illustrations for A Very Brief Account and the America series of colonial narratives indicate that he used one visual aesthetic for all the texts, inflammatory or otherwise. De Bry thus could not have been culpable in the Black Legend—to the extent that the Black Legend is even a valid historical concept. Biography
Theodor (Theodorus, Dietrich, Dirk) de Bry, Flemish engraver, goldsmith, editor and publisher. He trained under his grandfather, Thiry de Bry the Elder (d. ), and under his father, Thiry de Bry the Younger (), who were jewelers and engravers, engraving copper plates.
De Bry fled the Spanish persecution of Flemish Protestants and lived in Strassburg (Strasbourg) from to and then in Frankfurt am Main, where he established an engraving and publishing business. He twice visited London, where he executed such works as 12 plates for The Procession of the Knights of the Garter and another 34 plates for The Funeral of Sir Philip Sydney. He met the English geographer Richard Hakluyt, with whose assistance he collected materials for a finely illustrated collection of accounts of voyages and travels, Collectiones peregrinationum in Indiam orientalem et Indiam occidentalem (; "Collected Travels in the East Indies and West Indies"), which was continued by his sons Johann Theodor de Bry () and Johann Israel de Bry (died c. ) but not completed until by Matthäus Merian the Elder ().
