In the Store
The rumors about the fight at the sugar mill
swirl around the salt fish and travelers plum,
the sleek sausages hanging under the open transom,
the dried scallops—fat medallions of gold—
sorted by origin in wicker baskets.
A barber comes in early to buy some young ginger
but stays a while to chat
with the schoolteacher’s petite wife
who is looking for peanut oil.
Before she leaves, she coaxes her toddler
to recite a quatrain out loud;
all the “uncles” applaud, and the little girl
gets to choose a rock candy
from the tall glass jar under the counter.
In the far corner of the courtyard
beside blue bundles of fishing lines and nets
the letter writer at his table listens patiently
as the housepainter relates the death of his brother;
the two agree, however,
to omit any mention to his widow
of how he had died of opium poisoning.
As the two get up to leave,
a kinsman, who raises ducks by the marshes,
presses a small coin without a word
into the painter’s gaunt hand.
At the long counter the taro farmer
arranges with the owner to settle his accounts;
he confesses the work in the fields is too harsh,
and he must return to care for his ailing wife.

Issue #29 Malama was guest edited by Dana Naone Hall, celebrating a lot of native Hawaiian writing at that time, so that was really neat. Joe Stanton and Jim Harstad helped out with # Ten Rules of Fishing, which was a collection of high school writing in Hawai‘i. So Eric and Darrell were able to take a break from the editorial work, but they also were able to utilize the expertise of other people to provide a different perspective on local literature. So that was pretty neat.
KT: So you’ve highlighted some of the issues in the first phase. Are there any others that were noteworthy that you want to talk about?
WTL: Yeah. Some funny moments. One was Issue # We were going to Darrell’s house for a meeting. This was his new house in Hawai‘i Kai, and he said, “Okay, I got all this stuff on the floor.” So we got on the floor, and he said, “Here, there are all these printed copies of the newest, regular issue. I got from Honolulu Broom Company the label for their brooms, which has a Hula girl sweeping, using a broom.” And so he got the labels and he said, “Okay, you guys, glue the labels onto the front cover.” There was a big puk

Those were some of the issues we were dealing with in that conference, but then let me go further. Historically, for me, there are certain major consequences in the aftermath of that event. One was, as I said before, that Stephen Sumida and Arnold Hiura published this annotated bibliography. All that they could find in all of the libraries and elsewhere in Hawai‘i about ethnic writing, local literature written in English from the early s onward. Another achievement was a little bit later. The bibliography was a catalyst for Stephen Sumida to go back to complete his PhD work. He later published his thesis, “And the View from the Shore,” which was a milestone of literary criticism of local literature. Also, in , Frank Chin’s visit. Frank did not participate in the Talk Story conference. We brought him over in , and he was the primary writer of the Aiiieeeee! collections that were published on the West Coast
KT: Can I stop you there for a second and have you talk a little bit more about Frank Chin and Aiiieeeee!? I remember Aiiieeeee! myself, but most people probably aren’t familiar with it.
WTL: Well, I mean it was one of
