Konrad Adenauer,  ©Adenauer was West Germany's first chancellor and a key figure in rebuilding the country after World War Two.

Konrad Adenauer was born in Cologne on 5 January , the son of a lawyer. He studied at the universities of Freiburg, Munich and Bonn before himself becoming a lawyer. He became a member of Cologne City Council, and in lord mayor of the city. He was elected to the Provincial Diet and, in , became president of the Prussian State Council, making him one of the most influential politicians in Germany.

Adenauer was replaced as mayor of Cologne after the Nazis came to power, and was briefly imprisoned in He was arrested by the Gestapo in September and accused of involvement in the failed July bomb plot against Hitler.

The United States, which liberated Cologne, appointed Adenauer mayor again, but he was dismissed soon afterwards by the British military government. Adenauer set about forming a new political party, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). Biography:

The son of a Cologne civil servant; was reared in a Roman Catholic family; studied law and political science at the universities of Freiburg im Breisgau, Munich and Bonn (); joined () the Deutsche Zentrumspartei (German Centre Party), representing the Roman Catholics; was elected a member of the Cologne municipal council (Beigeordneter, ; erster Beigeordneter, ); chosen Bürgermeister of Cologne (18 Sep ) and subsequently approved (6 Oct ) as Oberbürgermeister (took office 18 Oct ); elected to the Prussian Herrenhaus (upper chamber of the parliament) (); called for creation of a west German state in association with the German Reich; chosen president of the Prussian Council of State (Preußischer Staatsrat) (7 May - 26 Apr ); was considered a potential candidate for the Reichskanzler (Reich Chancellor), but Wilhelm Marx was appointed instead (17 May ); fled Cologne (13 Mar ) with the advent of the Nazi to power and later was declared suspended from the office (notified 4 Apr ); formally relieved of his duties as Oberbürgermeister (17 Jul ); lived in retirement (); was sent to a concentration camp (); restored as Oberbürgermeister

Konrad Adenauer was born in Cologne, Germany in After studying at the Universities of Freiburg, Munich and Bonn, he became a lawyer. In , he was elected as a Mayor for Cologne, a position he held until He also became President of the Prussian State Council, making him one of the most powerful voices in Germany.

He was a staunch Catholic and his ideology put him at odds with the Nazi party. His opposition to Hitler and the Nazi Party led to his removal from office in when the Nazi&#;s were elected. During the s and early s, Konrad Adenauer kept a low profile trying to escape persecution from the Nazi&#;s. After the failed bomb plot of , he was arrested and interned at a concentration camp near Bonn. He survived the war and in was temporarily placed as mayor of Cologne again.
