La linotipia (también conocida como linotipo) es la máquina que Ottmar Mergenthaler inventó en y que ayudó a mecanizar la composición de tipos que hasta ahora se hacía de forma manual para poder imprimir.
Junto con la impresión tipográfica (que ya vimos cuando hablamos de Gutenberg), la linotipia fue la maquinaria básica en la industria de artes gráficas desde finales del siglo XIX hasta los años 70, cuando fue sustituida en gran medida por la impresión de litografía offset y la composición electrónica.
El nombre de la máquina proviene del hecho de que produce una línea completa de texto de una vez, lo que representó una mejora significativa respecto al proceso manual anterior, en el cual la composición tipográfica se realizaba letra por letra.
El mecanismo consistía en teclear el texto a componer (una línea) en el teclado del frontal de la máquina. Se accionaba el dispositivo para que se formase un lingote de metal fundido y se proseguía con la línea siguiente, obteniendo al final una página formada de lingotes individualmente creados.
