Chuichi Nagumo was born in Japan in He joined the Japanese Navy and eventually became commander of the Japanese 1st air fleet. A strong supporter of the integration of air and sea power, Nagumo was the director of the air attacks on Pearl Harbor on 7th December,
Nagumo also organized the bombing raids on Australia, Ceylon and India. After the loss of four aircraft carriers at Midway Nagumo was demoted and was given command of a small naval flotilla in the Marianas.
In Nagumo was given the task of organizing the defences of Saipan. Chuichi Nagumo committed suicide on 6th July during the later stages of the Allied conquest of the island.

Nagumo, Chuichi, born in Yonezawa, Yonezawa-shi, Yamagata, Japan Chuichi graduated from the 36th class of the Imperial Japanese Naval Academy in , with a ranking of 8 out of a class of cadets. As a midshipman, he served in the protected cruisers Soya and Niitaka and the armored cruiser Nisshin. After his promotion to ensign in , he was assigned to cruiser Asama.
After attending torpedo and naval artillery schools, he was promoted to sub-lieutenant and served in the battleship Aki, followed by the destroyer Hatsuyuki. In , he was promoted to lieutenant and was assigned to the battlecruiser Kirishima, followed by the destroyer Sugi. He was assigned his first command, the destroyer Kisaragi, on
Nagumo graduated from the Naval War College, and was promoted to lieutenant commander in His specialty was torpedo and destroyer tactics. From , he was captain of the destroyer Momi, but was soon sent to shore duty with various assignments by the Imperial Japanese Navy General Staff. | Chuichi Nagumo (&#;&#; &#;&#; March 25, - July 6, ) was an admiral of the Imperial Japanese Navy. He was the successful commander of the attack on Pearl Harbor, but was defeated at the important Battle of Midway. After graduating from the Japanese Naval Academy in , he took various jobs (mainly in aircraft carrier tactics) in the IJN, until he gained control of a Japanese Carrier Striking Force. While commanding this force, Nagumo executed the effective attack on Pearl Harbor, and fought well in the Pacific Theatre campaigns. However, he lost four carriers in the turning point of World War 2 in the Pacific, the Battle of Midway. This led to much criticism, mainly because many Japanese citizens felt that Nagumo had not put forth a whole-hearted effort during the battle. Afterwards, he was placed in command of naval forces in the Marianas, and in the final stages of the US capture of Saipan, committed suicide rather than surrender. |

Chūichi Nagumo (南雲 忠一, Nagumo Chūichi, 25 March – 6 July ) was an admiral in the Imperial *anese Navy (IJN) during World War:II. Nagumo led *an's main carrier battle group, the Kido Butai, in the attack on Pearl Harbor in , and over the next months in successful raids on Darwin in Australia and in the Indian Ocean. In June , he participated at the Battle of Midway, where his strike force suffered a crushing defeat. Nagumo was re-*igned to another fleet during the Guadalc* campaign, and later stationed in the *anese home islands.
