Glittering World
In this exhibition, all that glitters isn’t gold: It’s the stunning Navajo jewelry of the Yazzie family.
According to the Navajo creation story, the tribe’s ancestors traveled through chaotic, sunless worlds before reaching a fourth plane of existence — earth world, a glittering world drenched in light.
Today the Navajo still inhabit this land, a swath of sun-scorched desert stretching from northeastern Arizona to patches of New Mexico, Utah, and Colorado. But tucked away in the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian – New York, a similarly sparkling, albeit smaller-scale, sphere exists: a retrospective dedicated to the Yazzies, a close-knit group of Navajo kin who are recognized by collectors and curators alike as one of the Southwest’s preeminent jewelry-making families.
The exhibition — aptly titled Glittering World: Navajo Jewelry of the Yazzie Family — features ropes of stamped silver beads and squash blossom necklaces dripping with coral and turquoise. Concho belts, rings, bracelets, and bolos glisten in display cases, the overhead light illuminating intricate lapidary work and sculpted silver and gold settings.

Jewelry making has long been an important part of the lives of Southwest Native peoples. During the last 50 years, Native jewelers in the Southwest—Navajos in particular—have created a contemporary aesthetic that draws on traditional materials and reflects the persistence of cultural values such as beauty, centering, and balance. Glittering World presents the story of Navajo jewelry through the lens of the gifted Yazzie family of Gallup, New Mexico—one of the most celebrated jewelry making families of our time. The silver, gold, and stone inlay work of Lee Yazzie and his younger brother, Raymond, has won every major award in the field. Their sister Mary Marie makes outstanding jewelry that combines fine bead- and stonework; silver beads are handmade by other sisters. Glittering World—featuring almost examples of contemporary jewelry made by several members of the Yazzie family—shows how the family’s art flows from their Southwest environs and strong connection to their Navajo culture. Born in Shiprock, New Mexico, he hesitates when asked to pronounce the name of his Navajo clan aloud, though he has known it since his youth. The problem for artist Elmer Yazzie is not secrecy, but that the language of the Dinee—the name by which the Navajos prefer to be known—is not a written one. Attempting to spell the long clause that means Where the Two Waters Meet is virtually impossible. A reservation-born Native American with a mission-school education and a Dutch-American wife, Yazzie is truly an individual at the place where many different waters, or cultures, meet. A lifelong Christian in the Reformed tradition, he received his undergraduate degree in art education at Calvin College in Michigan. He accepted in a general way the Calvinist doctrine of being chosen, but until eight years ago, he had not applied it to his artistic bent. Though he has painted dozens of murals in southwestern churches since and mentored aspiring artists of all ages for 22 years at the Rehoboth Christian Reformed School, Yazzies reluctance to call himself an artist was due, in part, to his Navajo percepti
