Canadian speedskating folk hero Gilmore Junio earns return trip to Olympics

“I’m not too sure yet what the narrative is going to be, but I’m glad the story gets to have another chapter and not just end here,” the year-old said.

The trials concluding Tuesday will complete Canada’s long-track team for February’s Winter Games. The 10 men and 10 women who will race for Canada at the Gangneung Oval will be announced Wednesday.

Alex Boisvert-Lacroix won the men’s  Friday even though he’d been pre-selected for Pyeongchang.

The year-old from Sherbrooke, Que., won his first career World Cup gold medals last month in Salt Lake City, Utah, and in Calgary.

Boisvert-Lacroix is training to peak for Pyeongchang, so he was more than satisfied with his performance Friday on little rest.

Biography

Gilmore Junio became internationally known for his remarkable display of sportsmanship at Sochi when he gave his spot in the m to teammate Denny Morrison, who had missed qualifying in that event after a fall at the Canadian trials. Morrison went on to win silver, a medal the two friends celebrated together. A few months later Junio was gifted with a special commemorative crowd-funded medal. Earlier in the Games, Junio had finished 10th in his specialty, the m, ranking him as the top Canadian in the event. Junio made a second Olympic appearance at PyeongChang where he finished 17th in the m. He became a three-time Olympian at Beijing  

Junio had shown much promise as a short track skater, but disaster struck in his last year as a junior. Two weeks before the Canadian Junior Championships he was taken out during a race and fell into the boards head first, suffering compression fractures to his T5 and T8 vertebrae. Two days after he got home he decided to switch to long track where there was less risk of falling and re-injuring himself. CALGARY — Their story is part of Canada's Olympic Games lore.

Canadian speedskater Gilmore Junio vacated his spot in the men's 1, metres in the Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, so his teammate Denny Morrison could race it.

Morrison handed over the silver medal he won to Junio at Calgary's Olympic Oval on Saturday, when a banner was raised honouring Morrison's career during World Cup racing there.

"I wanted to give my medal to Gilmore because our stories are so intertwined," Morrison said. "I thought it was an appropriate time, as my banner is literally being raised to the rafters forever.

"I couldn't have won a silver medal without what he did for me. Thank you is not enough."

Junio introduced Morrison during the ceremony, and Morrison stunned him by handing over the medal.

"I was really surprised," Junio said. "Denny has been one of my best friends for a long time, so to get this from him means a lot."
