Hester Thrale - Biography

Biography

Thrale was born at Bodvel Hall, Caernarvonshire, Wales. As a member of the powerful Salusbury Family, she belonged to one of the most illustrious Welsh land-owning dynasties of the Georgian era. She was a direct descendant of Katheryn of Berain. Her father was John Salusbury.

After her father had gone bankrupt in an attempt to invest in Halifax, Canada, she married the rich brewer Henry Thrale on 11 October , at St. Anne's Chapel, Soho, London. They had 12 children and lived at Streatham Park. However, the marriage was often strained; her husband was often slighted by members of the Court and may well have married to improve his social status. The Thrales' eldest daughter, Hester, became a viscountess.

After her marriage, Mrs Thrale was liberated and free to associate with whom she pleased. Due to her husband's financial status, she was able to enter London society, as a result of which she met Samuel Johnson, James Boswell, Bishop Thomas Percy, Oliver Goldsmith and other literary figures, including the young Fanny Burney, whom she took with her to Gay Street, Bath. (There is some evidence that she was jealous of the attention given to t

Hester Thrale &#; A Welsh diarist who described 18th-century life, but mostly the life of Dr. Samuel Johnson

Hester Lynch Thrale was a Welsh author and was mostly remembered as the diarist who wrote a lot about Dr. Samuel Johnson. He was 32 years older than Hester, who was only 23, and yet, they bonded since the moment they met, their friendship lasting twenty years until Johnson’s death.

Thrale was an intelligent and interesting character, but in history, however, she remains to be known only as Johnson’s friend and mistress. Besides detailing information about Johnson’s life, her writings are notable and important for her well-written description of 18th-century life.

Hester was born in Caernarvonshire, Wales, in , in a noble and powerful family – the Salusbury Family, which was one of the most representative, wealthy, land-owning dynasties of the Georgian era.

She was the daughter of the diarist, explorer, and co-founder of Halifax, Nova Scotia – John Salusbury, and a direct descendant of the Welsh noblewoman, Katheryn of Berain.

When Hester’s father tried to invest in Halifax, Canada, the family went bankrupt, and in , Hester married the wealthy Henry Thrale, a brew

Hester Lynch Thrale Piozziis one of the most interesting female writers of the late eighteenth century. The only daughter of an impoverished Welsh family, she received an excellent education “although Education was a Word then unknown, as applied to Females” (Thraliana). At the age of sixteen she could read and write fluently in French, Italian and Spanish, and began studying Hebrew at the age of seventy, clearly portraying her strong, life-long interest in different cultures and languages. Her passion for literature led many critics to compare her to contemporary female writers: Elizabeth Montagu, Catherine Talbot, Frances Burney, and even Mary Wollstonecraftand Helen Maria Williams. Her relationship with the female intellectual world of that time, however, is both ambiguous and fascinating.

The most well known part of her biography is her forced marriage to the rich brewer Henry Thrale, which was arranged to save her family from bankruptcy. After the marriage, she moved to his house in Streatham Park. Thi

A friend of Dr. Samuel Johnson. Born 16 January at Bodfel, near Pwllheli, Caernarfonshire, only child of John Salusbury, Bachygraig, Flintshire, and Hester Maria (died ), daughter of Sir Thomas Cotton, bart., of Combermere and Lleweni. Her inordinate pride in her Welsh ancestry can be understood if it be remembered that on the paternal and the maternal sides she was a descendant of Katheryn of Berain; her father was a descendant of Katheryn's second and her mother of the first marriage. Her career is described in the D.N.B. and other works, and, more recently (Oxford, ), by James L. Clifford in Hester Lynch Piozzi (Mrs. Thrale), a work based on an exhaustive study of much 'Piozziana' and 'Thraliana,' including the material in the Henry E.
