Henry Knox (July 25, – October 25, ) was an Americanbookseller from Boston, who, at 24 years old, became the chief artillery officer of the Continental Army and later a close adviser of George Washington during the American Revolution. He was instrumental in forming the Society of Cincinnati, an organization for French and American veterans of the revolutionary war. He served as the fledgling nation's first Secretary of War, from , and remained in office more than 10 years. Knox saw to the first ship building for the United States Navy. He was a staunch backer of the Constitutional Convention and helped to sway Washington toward attending. Knox retired from his government position in

Henry Knox was born July 25, , to William and Mary Campbell Knox in Boston. The seventh of ten children, his parents had immigrated to Massachusetts Colony from Northern Ireland. Henry's father, a shipmaster trading with the West Indies, died quite young at the age of fifty. 

When his father passed away, Henry gave up school and found a job as a clerk in a Boston bookstore to provide for his family. He loved books, read constantly, and later opened a store of his own. History and military science—particularly artillery—interested Henry, and he gained book knowledge which would influence his role in the American Revolution. Before the war started, Henry married Lucy Flucker in June , despite her father’s disapproval and her brother's enlistment in the British army.

Influenced by Boston's protests and revolution fever, Knox joined a local militia group called the Boston Grenadier Corps. In , he served in the Siege of Boston. Henry Knox () was born in Boston, the seventh of ten children by William Knox and Mary Campbell Knox, pioneers from North Ireland. William Knox was a shipmaster, carrying on trade with the West Indies. Suffering from financial difficulties and all the mental stress and burdens that go with money woes, William died at the age of fifty. Henry gave up school to support his family, becoming a clerk in a Boston bookstore, later opening one himself. He was an avid reader, fond of history and military science, especially artillery. His expertise in this field would become his chief contribution to the American Revoultion.

Having grown up the oldest of his family, Mr. Knox did not know that six of his siblings would die at extremely young ages. His father was unable to provide for his family and when he went to the West Indies.  In addition, 's mother took care of his brothers and sisters while he was at work.

At a young age, was admitted into the Boston Latin School but after his father left to the West Indies when he was 12, he departed school. He then became a clerk at a local bookstore to support his mother.
