The historical city Jhansi is situated near the border of Madhya Pradesh which is often synonymous with the name of Rani Lakhmibai, a key player in�&#;s First War of Independence. Gangadhar Rao ancestors hailed from Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra. Some of them moved to Khandesh during the rule of Peshwa. They served important posts in the Peshwa and Holkar armies. Raghunath Hari Newalkar strengthened Maratha polity in Bundelkhand. However as he grew old, he handed over the reins of Jhansi to his younger brother Shiv Rao Bhau.

Until the 9th century, the area was predominantly, under the Rajputs. A famous forerunner in the area, around the 12th century, to the Ranee of Jhansi, was Ranee Durgavati who repelled three Muslim attacks but died fighting in the last fight on the battlefield.
