On the 24th of August , Italian painter Lavinia Fontana was born in Bologna. She is considered the first ever woman artist to work within the same sphere as her male counterparts, independently and outside a royal court or convent. “The most significant and prolific female artist of the 16th century, Lavinia Fontana opened up opportunities for successive generations of women artists throughout Europe. Like most of her counterparts, she received her initial training from her father, Prospero Fontana, a painter who had studied under the Mannerist Florentine artist and writer Giorgio Vasari. She was his only surviving child. Encouraged by her father to develop her artistic potential, early in her career she received both public and private commissions in Bologna. He arranged an introduction to a nobleman and artist from Imola, Gian Paolo de Zappi, and then arranged their marriage in Although both Zappi and Fontana are listed as members of the prestigious Accademia di San Luca in Rome, Murphy claims that Zappi was not a painter. Unlike most marriages
My last two posts mentioned the Lavinia art installation at the Loggia dei Vini in Villa Borghese. But who was Lavinia? Born in Bologna in , Lavinia Fontana was a painter. Her father, Prospero Fontana, was a painter, and he encouraged his daughters own artistic talent. By her twenties, she was garnering commissions. In she married Gian Paolo Zappi, Count of Imola, who was one of her fathers students. As a wedding gift to her husbands family, she painted a self portrait. In this portrait, she sits at a virginal (a harpsichord type instrument), elegantly dressed, and quietly confident. Its an allusion to her own virginity and demonstrates that she had musical training befitting a fine young lady. This lovely painting today is in the collection of Romes Accademia de San Luca, an academy of artists in Rome, now known as the Accademia Nazionale di San Luca. The Accademia is located near our apartment, on the way to the Trevi Fountain. Livia Fontana went on to become the first woman member of the academy, which included notables such as Bernini, Piranesi, and Reni. Whats unusual is that her wedding contract specified that she would continue her career as

Guest post by Elizabeth Lev, Duquesne in Rome Caravaggio is now a household name; sometimes it seems that he was the sole artistic genus of the turn of the seventeenth century. As with any superstar player, though, there were dozens of hungry talents nipping at his heels. Guido Reni, Annibale Carracci and young Peter Paul Rubens were his most famous artistic rivals, studying his techniques and hunting the same commissions. But there is one contender—whose fame, like Caravaggio’s, was international; whose work commanded similar prices; and whose patrons also included princes and prelates—whose name is all too frequently left out of the list. She was Lavinia Fontana, the first professional female painter in Italy, whose stratospheric success story remains to this day insufficiently appreciated. Lavinia was born on August 24, in Bologna, at the time the second city of the Papal States. Bologna had a history of remarkable woman. In the fourteenth century, Novella D’Andrea had lectured at the University of Bologna—albeit from behind a screen, to hide her beaut
