Joseph Lister He was a British scientist and surgeon. He managed to develop antiseptic surgery practices during the Victorian era in England thanks to his knowledge of the theory about the origin of putrefaction and fermentation of Louis Pasteur. He was also the one who led the use of the so-called catgut or absorbable suture in surgical wounds.
The antiseptic method that Lister developed substantially changed the practice of surgical interventions in the 19th century. At that time the operations were carried out under extremely precarious conditions, not only due to inadequate hygiene, but also due to the conception of the public spectacle they had.
During the period in which Lister was practicing surgery, a scientific view of the practice of medicine was rare. This was so because, in general, surgeons were considered mere performers of amputations.
However, due in part to a systematic statistical investigation into the results of his interventions, Lister managed to convince his guild of another view. At the beginning they were quite reticent, especially their countrymen, but later they understood

Joseph introduced the method of antiseptic surgery and wound care while working as a surgeon at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. He introduced phenol to sterilize sutures, patients’ skin, surgical instruments, surgeons’ hands, and wards. Lister researched the role of inflammation and tissue perfusion on wound healing. Joseph was considered the father of modern surgery because his contribution in surgical procedures led to the reduction in postoperative infections. Joseph Lister is most known for his surgical sterile technique. He was highly praised for his findings and was called Sir Joseph Lister, First Baronet Lister, from to Lister was the one responsible for introducing carbolic acid, which is now referred to as phenol, to surgical procedures. He used this to clean and sterilize wounds after he observed that many patients who needed an amputation would later die of sepsis. In the span of just four years, he reduced the mortality rate by 15% in his ward.
Early Life
Joseph was the son of J.J. Lister who was the inventor of achromatic object lenses which were used in compound microscopes. He lived a comfortable life in a Quaker home located in Upton, Essex.
