Mlungisi Gegana is an acoustic bassist, electric bass player, band leader, composer, music arranger, music producer and session musician. He is widely versed in South African music idioms and has collaborated with some of the finest jazz musicians in South Africa. Gegana’s combos have graced the stages of South Africa’s major jazz festivals and premier live music venues.

Mlu, as he is familiarly known, has performed with South African and international musicians on local and global stages including France, Norway, Algeria and Mozambique. The most memorable of these performances was with Zim Ngqawana at the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands. As a session bass player, Mlu has been featured on the gospel, pop, and traditional music albums of his peers and a younger generation of music artists. He often experiments with cross-cultural, cross-genre and cross-generational music.

The tour will also focus on workshopping fresh works composed over a number of years with students from The Mlungisi Gegana Music Academy. I ask a with &#;a city where it began&#; in mind &#; what is your definition of South African jazz?

South African jazz has its own unique space in the jazz art form around the world. Most of our jazz musicians in the country are heavily influenced by our different cultures. If you go to Cape Town for an example, you can hear jazz music is influenced by goema.

In the Eastern Cape, you will hear more of umngqungqo (Rhythm) and umxhentso (Xhosa Dance), that has a big influence in South African jazz. We have a younger generation of jazz musicians that are collaborating with international musicians, where a new approach to jazz is being introduced to the world.

Né à Queenstown, dans la province du Cap-Oriental, Gegana découvre sa passion pour la musique dès son plus jeune âge. À l’âge de 11 ans, il commence à expérimenter avec une guitare fabriquée à partir d’une boîte d’huile faite maison et se concentre alors sur la percussion. Mais c’est en , en aidant sa grand-mère dans son jardin, qu’il décide de se consacrer pleinement à la musique. Gegana's combos have graced stages of South Africa's major jazz festivals and premier live music venues.
I have performed with South African and international musicians on local and global stages including Sweden, France, Norway, Algeria, Namibia, Mozambique, Lesotho, Zambia, Zimbabwe. The most memorable of all my performances was with ZimNgqawana at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Netherland and a saxophonist from an America leading jazz fusion band called Yellow Jackets by the name of Bob Mintzer at Sun City Super Bowl as a backing musician.
