Newcastle actress 'thrilled' about Balamory comeback

The much-loved children's series, Balamory, has been re-commissioned for two new series on CBeebies, set to air from

Kim Tserkezie, known for her role as Penny Pocket in the original series, expressed her excitement about the news.

Speaking to the BBC she said: "It’s so exciting. I was contacted the day before the news broke, so I had 24 hours, not being able to say anything.

"It’s just absolutely fantastic. I am absolutely thrilled for the Balamory fans who have campaigned for this for a very long time.

The actress from Heaton in Newcastle has fond memories of filming the original series.

Kim Tserkezie

Kim Tserkezie has worked as an Actor, Presenter, Writer and Executive Producer for twenty-five years, with a career spanning comedy, drama and documentary. In , she was included in the Top 10 most influential disabled people in the UK and named Number 1 in Digital & Media (Shaw Trust Disability Power ). Kim was awarded Broadcast Hot Shot Writer () and won an RTS Award for best drama performance in film, Obsession (BFI).

Kim got her first TV break as a presenter for BBC&#;s Disability Today and From The Edge. She played Penny Pocket in four series and two arena tours of BAFTA award winning, Balamory. Other acting credits include Boy Meets Girl (BBC2) and Wolfblood (CBBC).

Kim set up Scattered Pictures in Newcastle to develop productions which focus on underrepresented talent and perspectives. Since , the company has co-developed TV scripted comedy and drama in collaboration with BBC Studios, Talkback Fremantle, Tiger Aspect Productions, Ardimages UK, Seven Seas Films, Lime Pictures and IMG and has received multiple radio documentary commissions for BBC World Service.

Geordie Balamory star Kim Tserkezie opens up about iconic TV show's 20th anniversary and planning a Newcastle reunion

Two decades have passed since the much-loved children's TV show Balamory first aired on Cebeebies but to Geordie star Kim Tserkezie it seems like it was just yesterday.

The year-old from High Heaton shot to fame as Penny Pocket on the programme about a fictional island community off the west coast of Scotland. Known for her bright blue outfit and talent for maths, Penny Pocket, joined the show's lineup of iconic characters including Miss Hoolie, PC Plum, Edie McCredie and Archie the inventor.

The theme tune, "What's the story in Balamory, wouldn't you like to know?" became one most recognisable in children's TV when it aired between and Now, a new generation of youngsters will get to see the show as it returns to BBC iPlayer.

    With thirty years of experience in broadcasting, Kim's career spans comedy, drama and documentary for UK and international broadcasters and streamers. 

    Kim is a Full member of BAFTA and has supported the media industry with training and consultancy, shaping the development of new policies, procedures and events for many years, including as the former Vice Chair of the British Film Institute (BFI) Disability Screen Advisory Group, Board member of Royal Television Society (NETB) and Trustee of New Writing North.
