Markus Lüpertz wurde geboren am April in Reichenberg, damals zur Tschechoslowakei gehörig, heute Liberec in Tschechien. Der Sohn eines Kochs interessierte sich früh für das Malen und Zeichnen und begann eine Lehre als Maler von Weinflaschenetiketten, die er aber vorzeitig abbrechen musste, weil man ihm ein Mangel an Talent bescheinigte. Eine zweite Lehre als Gebrauchsgrafiker scheiterte an der Insolvenz des Lehrherrn. Markus Lüpertz begann kurzerhand ein Studium an der Werkkunstschule Krefeld (heute Teil der Hochschule Niederrhein) und hielt sich für längere Zeit in der Abtei Maria Laach auf, wo er sich intensiv mit religiösen Themen beschäftigte. Michael Werner Gallery, London is pleased to present an exhibition of recent paintings by Markus Lüpertz. Painted over the last four years in Italy and Germany, the artist masterfully combines Southern and Northern European painting traditions while creating work that is new, innovative and contemporary.
The art historian Eric Darragon has said that Lüpertz “is a contemporary artist who wants a future for his works and finds it by thinking about the past.” In this new body of work, Lüpertz returns to the theme of Arcadia, a classic, pastoral utopia. Figures are pulled from Italian Renaissance and Dutch Golden Age paintings, given identities as characters from Greek mythology and placed into idyllic landscapes, largely inspired by the surroundings of his studio in Märkisch Wilmersdorf, Germany. A veteran painter who has exhibited worldwide for nearly sixty years, Lüpertz continues to explore art history and classicism and introduce new materials and methods in his oeuvre.

Herkunft
Markus Lüpertz wurde am April in Liberec/Böhmen geboren und wuchs zusammen mit einem Bruder auf. flüchtete die Familie nach Rheydt im Rheinland. L.s Vater betrieb nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg dort eine Weberei, nach dem Konkurs der Firma arbeitete er als Wollwarenvertreter. L.s Mutter war Köchin. Nach dem Konkurs konnten die Eltern das Gymnasium nicht mehr bezahlen.
Ausbildung
Nach der Schule begann L. eine Lehre als Maler für Etiketten von Weinflaschen. Mit 15 Jahren wurde er wegen "mangelnden Talents" entlassen. Eine zweite Lehre als Gebrauchsgrafiker endete ebenfalls ohne Abschluss, da die Ausbildungsfirma in Konkurs ging. Nach einem Jahr Arbeit unter Tage im Kohlebergbau begann er ein Kunststudium an der Werkkunstschule Krefeld bei Laurens Goossens, das er an der Kunst
