Pixley ka Isaka Seme was born at the American Zulu Mission Station in Inanda in present-day KwaZulu-Natal in
He attended the local mission school where the American missionary, Reverend Stephen Pixley (after whom he was named), took an interest in him and arranged for him to go to the Mount Hermon School in Massachusetts in the United States.
He then attended Columbia University in the city of New York and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in He won the university's highest oratorical honour, the George William Curtis medal, for his speech The Regeneration of Africa that year.
With financial assistance from missionaries he entered Jesus College in Oxford, England, to study law.
In he gained a Bachelor's degree in Civil Law, passed his first bar examinations and was called to the Bar at the Middle Temple, London. In , Seme met the multi-racial delegation, led by Rubusana and Schreiner, that arrived in London to petition the UK parliament not to pass the South Africa Act.

It is well known that the African National Congress was formed in and is considered the oldest political organisation on the African continent. What is often not widely known is that the person who founded it was one Pixley ka Isaka Seme, a thirty-year-old black South African from Inanda outside the city of Durban.
What is remarkable about Seme’s achievement in founding the ANC is not only that he succeeded where most had failed at forging black political unity. It is also the speed at which he did it. He had just returned to South Africa from the United Kingdom and the United States of America, where he had been a student since he was a teenager. In slightly over a year the founding conference of the ANC was convened and he was at its helm as the main organiser.

There are two good reasons for the publication of this book. Firstly, the name of Pixley kaIsaka Seme is today almost completely unknown. Yet it was largely because of his ideas and inspiration that the African National Congress was founded on an overcast but calm day (8 January) in (the subsequent days of the conference were fine and calm!). There is no full biography of Seme. Indeed, very little is known about his life. This book, then, aims to make available hitherto unknown material connected with his early years and to give insight into a character who was one of South Africa`s most important historical figures.
Secondly, the book is intended to honour the memory of Dr Richard Rive, scholar and writer (as well as friend). Pixley Isaka Ka Seme was born in October in the then colony of Natal. He was initially educated at a local mission school, and then went to the United States of America on a missionary scholarship for further education, including university studies at the Ivy League Columbia University in New York.
Seme was a gifted orator and at Columbia won the university's highest award for oratory after he spoke on the subject of 'The Regeneration of Africa'.
He was clearly a young man with a passion for education. After Columbia, he proceeded to yet another prestigious institution, this time in Britain, to attend Jesus College at Oxford University, where he read for a degree in Law. His legal studies would later be of great assistance in his fight against injustice in the newly established Union of South Africa.
