Summary of Katsushika Hokusai
Hokusai is widely recognized as one of Japan's greatest artists, having modernized traditional print styles through his innovations in subject and composition. His work celebrated Japan as a unified nation, depicting a diversity of landscapes and activities linked by shared symbols and stories. He was among the first artists to be shaped by and to shape globalization, drawing from international influences and, later, being embraced by European artists who borrowed his decorative motifs, his practice of working in series, and his vision of contemporary society. To this day, a plethora of artists continue to reckon with his legacy.
Accomplishments
- Hokusai introduced European perspective to Japanese printmaking, often taking a significant focal point and arranging his prints around this. He used various framing mechanisms to emphasize these focal points and create depth in his images. While twenty-first century viewers are used to seeing prints arranged in this way, the technique was unprecedented in Hokusai's day and it was due to his influence that it became a widespread tactic in Japanese printmaking.

Katsukawa Shunshō (?~) was an ukiyo-e artist who became popular for his realistic portraits of kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers. He is also known for his intricate nikuhitsu-ga (paintings drawn on cloth or paper by hand) of beautiful women that he worked on in his later years. Some of Shunshō’s successful disciples were Katsukawa Shunkō, Katsukawa Shun’ei, Katsukawa Shunchō. The Katsukawa School wielded a big influence on the world of ukiyo-e. Biography: Hokusai Katsushika
Hokusai was born in in the Katsushika district of Edo (Tokyo) under the given name Tokitaro. His artistic training began at the age of 15 with an apprenticeship at a woodblock workshop. At 18, he joined the painting and printmaking school of Katsukawa Shunsho, adopting the name Katsukawa Shunro. Early in his career, Hokusai focused on actor portraits influenced by his teacher Shunsho.
During his year association with the Katsukawa Shunsho school, Hokusai broadened his studies, learning from Yusen of the Kano school of arts. His artistic exploration also included elements of Western-style paintings, as seen in his use of perspective in some designs.
