John Tomlinson

Sir John Rowland Tomlinson CBE (born 22 September ) is an English bass.

Tomlinson was born in Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, England, UK. He trained as a civil engineer at Manchester University before deciding on a career in opera at age He studied with Patrick McGuigan at the Royal Northern College of Music and with Otakar Kraus. Whilst studying at the RNCM, he was a member of the Manchester Universities Gilbert and Sullivan Society (MUGSS). He sings regularly with the Royal Opera and English National Opera, and has appeared with all the major British opera companies. He has sung at the Bayreuth Festival in Germany every year from to , as Wotan, the Wanderer, King Marke, Titurel, Gurnemanz, Hagen and the Dutchman. In , he created the title role in Harrison Birtwistle's opera The Minotaur at the Royal Opera House.

Tomlinson was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in for his services to music and was created a Knight Bachelor in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.

In he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society.

Sir John Rowland Tomlinson, CBE (born 22 September ) is an English bass. He was born in Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, England, UK.

Tomlinson trained as a construction engineer before deciding on a career in opera at age He studied at what was then the Royal Manchester College of Music (Royal Northern College of Music since ), and then with Otakar Kraus in London. He sings regularly with the Royal Opera and English National Opera, and has appeared with all the major British opera companies. He has sung at the Bayreuth Festival in Germany every year from to , as Wotan, the Wanderer, King Marke, Titurel, Gurnemanz, Hagen and the Dutchman. In , he created the title role in Harrison Birtwistle's opera The Minotaur at the Royal Opera House [shown in photo below].

Sir John Tomlinson, bass, was born in Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire. He intended becoming an engineer but singing took over and he studied at the RMCM and later with Otakar Kraus. He sang in the Scottish Opera Chorus from and in sang with Glyndebourne Touring Opera. He was principal bass at English National Opera from to He was invited to Bayreuth in and appeared there for 18 consecutive seasons in the Wagner roles of Wotan and Hagen in the Ring, King Mark in Tristan und Isolde, Titurel and Gurnemanz in Parsifal and the title-role in Der fliegende Holländer. His career has taken him to all the great opera houses of the world as Wotan/Wanderer, Hans Sachs in Die Meistersinger, Ochs in Der Rosenkavalier, Boris Godunov, King Philip in Don Carlo, Claggart in Billy Budd, and Bluebeard in Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle.
