About the Artist
Erté was born Romain de Tirtoff in St. Petersburg, Russia on November 23rd, and was raised amidst Russia's social elite. At the age of five he created an evening gown for his mother and managed to persuade the adults to craft it, they were astounded by the results. In , Romain left St. Petersburg for Paris at the age of nineteen with the aim of becoming an artist. After working with Paul " Le Magnifique" Poiret on several theatrical productions Romain, still under the pseudonym of Erte, began to work more independently. He hand-crafted original costume and fashion designs for many of the era’s most renowned actresses, including Joan Crawford, Lillian Gish, Marion Davies, Anna Pavlova, Norma Shearer, and others. His masterpieces for the stage included extravagant production designs at venues such as New York’s Radio City Music Hall, the Casino de Paris, and the Paris Opera. In he began his long professional relationship with Harper's Bazaar and created covers for the esteemed magazine. For 6 months in , Erté simultaneously worked with Vogue as well. Romain Tirtoff known as Erté (23 November , St. Petersburg — 21 April , Paris) was a Russian-born French artist, sculptor, interior, costume, and scenic designer, dressmaker and illustrator who practised Art Deco both in his work and his life. Celebrated, reputed, sought-after, and amazingly dedicated to work.
The most peculiar about Erté’s art is the fact that, though he lived in the days of Cubism, Fauvism, Expressionism (and later, Abstract Expressionism and other avant-garde movements of the century), he was persistent and confident in his commitment to Art Deco. This eclectic and ornate style was once inspired by Japanese prints and gorgeous ballet costumes, had its roots in the exotic Egyptian and American Indian cultures as well as in the classical outlines and rich drapery of Rococo. Erté drew cover pictures for fashion magazines, sketches of men’s and women’s clothes and decorations, designed building interiors and cognac bottle labels, stage sets and costumes. Romain de Tirtoff otherwise known as Erté, the father of Art Deco, was born to a fairly distinguished family in Saint Petersburg Russia. Erté’s pseudonym comes from the French pronunciation of his initials (Air Tay). He was considered a French artist despite his Russian birth because of his migration to France in the year It was in this same year that he decided to rename himself Erté rather than go by the name Erté; He did so in an effort to not embarrass his family who wanted him to follow in his father’s footsteps.

As mentioned in the previous paragraph Erté was born in Saint Petersburg Russia on November 23, He was the child of very well-off parents (aristocrats) who, being aware of his love for the arts, decided to support him in his early endeavors to pursue them. It was this support that aided Tirtoff in developing his artistic ability. At a very early age, Tirtoff was conflicted because of his love of both dance and art however, he realized that he could live without dance but not without design and art.
