Gareth Pugh is a British fashion designer renowned for his fantastical and futuristic designs, an aesthetic unparalleled in the industry since perhaps the dark and dreamy era of McQueen’s. Born August 31st , Pugh grew up in Sunderland in the United Kingdom and was an avid dancer as a child. The famed designer started his career in fashion, close to where his passions lay, at the youthful age of 14 when he began working as a costume designer for the English National Youth Theatre as part of the Wayne McGregor Company, the celebrated resident choreographic company at Sadler’s Wells, London.
Later he went on to study his craft, beginning his fashion studies at the City of Sunderland College and later completing his formal education at the prestigious Central Saint Martin's. Upon graduating in , his final collection was selected for the cover of cult British magazine Dazed & Confused, something that catapulted him into a whole new realm of fame and popularity as a young budding designer.

Gareth Pugh is a designer who shattered the monotony of an era of commercial fashion. Whether pumping the smell of chlorine into the Palais de Tokyo or sticking two fingers up at the conventional runway by showing his clothes in video installations and dance performances, he’s pushed British fashion to new extremes – and has never been afraid to break a few rules in the process. For Sunderland-born Pugh, it’s been ten years since his first London Fashion Week show, and after leaving for Paris to stage his SS09 collection under the guidance of then-mentor Rick Owens, he’s back to celebrate the major milestone in his creative hometown. As Pugh explains, “London is where everything began for me – it’s where I live and work and my entire creative family is here.” A retrospective show of Pugh’s work will be on display at Galeria Melissa, Covent Garden, from today (February 11) until the end of May. Early Life and CareerGareth Pugh, an English designer, developed an interest in fashion and started experimenting with its creation at the age of fourteen when he participated in the youth program at the National Theatre in London. However, it was only after completing his studies at St. Martin's College in that he began to make a name for himself. Pugh's breakthrough came when his clothing appeared on the cover of the English magazine Dazed & Confused in March , coinciding with his first fashion show. Since then, he has been determined not to compromise on his artistic vision.

Gareth Pugh originally trained as a dancer, beginning ballet lessons in On his tenth birthday Pugh’s mother took him to London to see The Phantom of the Opera.
Inspired by the streets of London, Pugh was amazed by the gritty sleaze that surrounded some of the areas.
In Pugh spent a summer in London working in the costume department of the National Youth Theatre, a position he continued for three years. Aged only 14, Pugh lied about his age to secure him the job.
Still with a strong love of dance, Pugh was forced to give up the art to focus on his A-Levels. He then studied sociology at the City of Sunderland College in , followed by an arts course, where he decided to set his heart on attending Central Saint Martins.
Accepted by the prestigious school, Pugh graduated in with a bachelors in fashion design. Having developed a dark aesthetic, his final collection, featuring balloons tied to various body parts, landed him the cover of Dazed & Confused magazine.
