The breathtaking renaissance in contemporary collage art
As French master Henri Matisse’s health began to fade in the s, throwing out the paintbrushes and picking up a pair of scissors helped unleash a newfound burst of creative energy. In his final years, Matisse’s simple but breathtakingly bright collages became some of the most admired and influential works of his career.
Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso coined the term ‘collage’ at the beginning of the 20th Century, but after decades of the technique languishing out of favour, a new wave of artists are once again pushing at the boundaries of what Matisse called “painting with scissors.”
Cut That Out by surveys the rich landscape of contemporary collage, which has grown beyond simple cut-and-paste to encompass assemblage, photomontage and mixed-media approaches.
Whether you recognised it as collage or not, you will surely have been stopped in your tracks by the vibrant, surreal and experimental work that now appears regularly on festival posters, album covers, AV installations and elsewhere.
Here’s our pick of the some of the leading collage designers working today, drawn from Cut That Out.

Design Philosophy: "it's about taking something that is widely available and making it one of a kind."
Inge Jacobsen
“I’m not really a patient person” explains Inge Jacobsen, an Irish-born artist who’s in the business of embroidery and collage. Interested in the over saturation of images, Jacobsen seeks to create work which is unique by using found imagery, stitching onto anything from newspaper articles to adverts to magazine covers, including our very own Beyonce shoot from last summer. Ahead of taking part in a group exhibition opening in Munich later this month, we asked her how she got into the seriously old craft and what she looks for in a canvas.
I choose images that appeal to me personally – either for their compositional values or its sex appeal
Dazed Digital: What kick started your interest in embroidery?
Inge Jacobsen: It started while I was at university, we had a lot of freedom on the course to explore our ideas in any way possible. I had some cross-stitch works that I inherited from my grandmother, and I thought it would be a really obvious medium to use to intervene into images that are already out there. It creates a nice contrast between the old and the new.
DD: How do you decide what to embroider? And how long does
Irish artist Inge Jacobsen creates amazingly detailed hand-stitched magazine covers. My practice is about intervening into found images through embroidery, cutting, and collaging. The images I use are mostly from women’s fashion magazines, pornographic images, and newspapers. My main concern as an artist is how one responds to the mass of imagery in the world. I am particularly interested in exploring the different contexts in which photography can be used. I like to stray from the conventional perceptions of what photography can and can’t be. With the over saturation of images, my practice seeks to intervene in this overwhelming consumption from the mass produced and alter it to create something unique.
