Sir Sandford Fleming
Born in Kircaldy, Scotland, Sir Sandford Fleming began working for an engineer at age It was at that time he learned to design and build harbours and waterworks, and surveyed for the railway.
In , at the age of 18, Sir Sandford arrived in Canada. He spent his first summer in Canada at the home of a friend in Peterborough – Dr. John Hutchison.
The Engineer
Sir Sandford worked in Peterborough, surveying until when he became a fully qualified engineer. It was during this time he drew and printed the first map of Peterborough.
In , Sir Sandford headed up plans for the Intercolonial Railway, connecting New Brunswick and Nova Scotia to Upper and Lower Canada. Much of the surveying was done by snowshoe and dogsled over rugged terrain.
Sir Sandford was also the first to survey and draw up plans for a rail line running from the Atlantic to the Pacific. He became director of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company when it was awarded the contract to build the rail line out west.

Biography of Sandford Fleming
Early Life and CareerSandford Fleming was a Canadian inventor and engineer of Scottish descent. He was born in Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland and at the age of 14, he became an assistant surveyor. When he was 18, he moved to Canada with his older brother David. They traveled around Canada and eventually settled in Peterborough. In , Fleming found a job as a surveyor and also joined the Royal Canadian Institute.
Contributions to the Canadian Railway
In , Fleming played a role in creating the first Canadian stamp, the Threepenny Beaver. He continued working as a surveyor and in , he became the chief engineer of the Northern Railway of Canada. During this time, Fleming advocated for the use of iron bridges instead of wooden ones, which often led to conflicts with architect Frederick William Cumberland. Two years later he designed the Threepenny Beaver, the first Canadian postage stamp. Meanwhile he was employed as a surveyor for the Grand Trunk Railway. In , at the age of 27, he became Chief Engineer of the Northern Railway of Canada, replacing many wooden bridges with iron bridges.
Fleming became Chief Engineer of the Northern Railway of Canada in , and three years later proposed building a railway right across Canada. Born at Fifeshire, Scotland in , he studied engineering in Scotland and immigrated to Canada in , subsequently working for the Northern Railway. He served as chief engineer of the Intercolonial Railway while it was under construction. He was then appointed engineer-in-chief for the surveys of the Canadian Pacific Railway, providing the surveys on which that railroad’s route was based. In he investigated early flooding in Manitoba in order to decide where to place bridges across the Red River.
In he retired to do scientific work. He developed, among other things, daylight saving time and the hour method of reckoning time. He also worked on cable communication. Knighted in , he was an ardent imperialist who served as president of the Royal Society in His major publications include A Railway to the Pacific through British Territory ().
