Mark Elder
He is Music Director of the Hallé Orchestra and is the former Artistic Director of Opera Rara (–19) and former Music Director of ENO (–93). He made his Royal Opera debut in ; recent engagements include Aida, PeterGrimes, L’Ange de Nisida in concert, L’Étoile, Il barbiere di Siviglia, Wozzeck, La bohème, The Tsar’s Bride, Fidelio and Adriana Lecouvreur. Recent operatic engagements elsewhere include Le prophète (Aix-en-Provence Festival), Samson et Dalila and Rusalka (Metropolitan Opera), Carmen and Les contes d’Hoffmann (Paris Opera) and DieMeistersingervonNürnberg (San Francisco Opera). He has recorded with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, The Hallé, LPO, CBSO, BBC SO, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and Opera Rara. The English conductor, Mark Philip Elder, is the son of a dentist. As a youth he divulged talent both as a singer and instrumentalist, serving as a chorister at Canterbury Cathedral and as the first-chair bassoonist in the National Youth Orchestra. He studied music at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, where he studied music and was a choral scholar. He was later mentored by renowned British conductor and musicologist Edward Downes. Sir Mark Elder CH CBE has been Music Director of the Hallé since September He enjoys close associations with the London Philharmonic and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. He was Music Director of English National Opera from to and has been Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC Symphony and City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestras. He has appeared annually at the Proms in London for many years including in and in the internationally televised Last Night of the Proms.
Sir Mark has appeared regularly in many of the most prominent international opera houses, including Covent Garden, the Metropolitan Opera New York, the Opéra National de Paris, the Lyric Opera of Chicago and Glyndebourne and was the first British conductor to conduct a new production at the Bayreuth Festival. He became Principal Guest Conductor of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra in September He was Music Director of English National Opera (), Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra () and of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra ( – ) and Music Director of Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, USA ( – ).
He has worked with many of the world’s leading symphony orchestras including the Berlin Philharmonic, Orchestre de Paris, Chicago Symphony, Boston Symphony, Royal Concertgebouw, Budapest Festival Orchestra and London Symphony Orchestra. He is a Principal Artist of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and works regularly with the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
