CK Voices in History™ Maya Angelou: Finding Her Voice

Fast forward, in , she took the stage at the Presidential Inauguration and recited her own poetry, finishing with the lines: “The Rock cries out to us today, You may stand upon me, But do not hide your face.” Be brave, she was saying. It seems the whole world is mourning the passing of the great Maya Angelou. The Pulitzer Prize nominee was, after all, one of the greatest voices of a generation &#; her books and poems touched millions of American adults. So how is it that we can explain the depth and breadth of the legendary author's influence on America to our kids?

Although she may be best known for tomes such as I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, which is better saved for the teen years (or older), Angelou is also the author of myriad books for kids. They're a perfect way to open the doors to a conversation about Angelou, and open your child's eyes to one of the greatest authors of our time.

Maya Angelou:

September 6,
A second fine book in this series for me, this time concerning the black American activist and author. From lowly tram conductor to reciter of her own works at presidential inaugurations, she certainly packed a lot into her life, just as America (not at all exclusively) seemed to want her to do less and less, and to think less and less of herself. I couldn't fully engage with this, partly as the artworks weren't rendered complete for my review copy, meaning I had monochrome place-holders at times. I do also find it problematic that books for this audience just mention Malcolm X and suchlike in passing, and never get the chance to show that people like them left a very violent legacy, and a very divided opinion. But that wasn't the remit here. Many people who don't know the full story of Ms Angelou will learn quite a bit here, and that isn't just the young readers this series serves so excellently well.
