Reesa Greenberg
Art historian
Reesa Greenberg is a Canadian art historian who writes and teaches about exhibition histories, museums, and the internet. Her work focuses on national, gendered, and ethnic identities; the contemporary artworld and war; as well as the production of historical consciousness in current museum practices. Thinking About Exhibitions, published in , which she co-edited with Bruce Ferguson and Sandy Nairne, remains a classic in the field. Greenberg’s essays and reviews have been published in Canadian Art, Parachute, RACAR, Intermédialités, Tate Papers, Gradiva, Kritische Berichte, Ethnologies, Jong Holland, De Witte Raaf, Novye Gazetta, and The Journal for Curatorial Studies as well as numerous anthologies. Greenberg has consulted on exhibitions and installations for the Art Gallery of Alberta, Edmonton, the Jewish Historical Museum, Amsterdam, and the exhibition Mirroring Evil at the Jewish Museum, New York. Who is Reesa Greenberg?
Reesa Greenberg is an independent scholar, museum consultant, and writer with an intense interest in cultural theory and the theory of exhibition and museum practices. She has translated these interests into a variety of contributions within the academic and museum communities.
She is currently an Adjunct Professor at York University in Toronto, Ontario and Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec.
In addition to publishing numerous essays on contemporary Canadian art and artists, she has written extensively on the theory and practice of exhibition experience in the contemporary museum, most notably in the book Thinking about Exhibitions, that she co-edited with Sandy Nairne and Bruce W. Ferguson.

Reesa Greenberg works primarily with the visual arts as one of the founders of the new field of exhibition studies. Her focus is on the staging of exhibitions, especially their effects on the meaning of artworks and viewer responses. She taught and mentored generations of curators and researchers through her teaching at Concordia University, Carleton University, the California College of the Arts and Moscow State University. Her writings have been published in numerous European languages. She is a member of the Research Committee of the CiÉCO project, New Uses of Museum Collections, a pioneering collaboration combining theory (academics) and practice (museums) to produce new knowledge. In addition, she has long examined the use of digital technologies in producing and distributing art, exhibitions and research. As part of her work in philanthropy and service, Greenberg has been Chair of the Carleton University Art Gallery Advisory Committee, a member of the Agnes’ Art Gallery Advisory Board, and an Advisor to the Acquisition Committee of the Board of Trustees of the National Gallery of Canada.
